My status
Morocco

At the western entrance to the Mediterranean Sea and northwest Africa, it is a land of great contrasts with high rugged mountains to arid Sahara and green Atlantic coasts.

Mainly a farming country of wheat, barley and maize, it is one of the world's chief exporters of citrus fruit.

Tourism is a major source of revenue, though the traveler beware, expect to be intimidated and followed for being the outsider.

Though in general it is a safe place, single travelers are more at risk of falling into situations which can be frightening.

Though I only spent a few nights in Tangier only, it was enough to say it wasn't the sort of place I felt comfortable in my journeys, watching over my back often and hassled by the many vendors and street guides looking to show you the way.

This may not be a fair comment, but it is a personal few of my experience here.

Rabat
About a million people live in the capital Rabat. Life is easy. Not many people harass you.

Rabat is a good first base to start exploring Morocco. You can get in touch with life the Moroccan way at your own pace.

Watch the changing of the Royal Guard at the Royal Palace, walk the narrow streets of the Casbah des Oudaya and visit the 12th-century Tour Hassan.

Fez
The city of Fez is still lingering back in the Middle Ages. As you arrive in the city and begin to walk around your senses are torn between beautiful sights, intricate sounds and colorful smells. Much of the city still is still holding on to its French roots.

Casablanca
Prepare for a shock from Casablanca. The city is further away from Oriental romanticism than any other in Morocco, Casablanca is a modern city.

Tangier
Having spent only a few days here it was certainly a shock for a westerner like me, culturally it was completely different to Europe, but one which meant I was always on guard.

There are some experiences which are well engrained in my memory, such as our time at the rug market where mint tea was on offer while dozens of rugs were rolled out in presentation, only to find in the end that no offer was too little to complete a sale.

Tangier is a short distance from southern Spain and Gibraltar, and good trip to take if your near and brave enough to do so.
